As a federal health insurance program for people 65+, Medicare can cover some medical costs associated with assisted living care services for eligible Medicare participants. However, it cannot cover room and board expenses for Bronx seniors.
New York seniors should consult the New York State consumer guide to community-based long-term care to learn more about what Medicare may cover.
If an older adult in the Bronx needs further assistance or individualized help with Medicare, they can also contact a local Social Security Administration (SSA) office in the borough. While it sounds similar to Medicare, Medicaid is a separate program. It’s a health insurance program for low-income people and is jointly funded by the state and federal governments. In the Bronx, this program is referred to as New York State Medicaid.
Like Medicare, Medicaid can’t cover the cost of room and board in assisted living communities in the Bronx.

If you don’t qualify for VA programs and benefits or chose not to pursue VA assistance, you may still be able to pay less than your civilian peers. Some communities may honor veterans and their families by offering a one-time or recurring veteran or military discount. It’s a good idea to inquire about this during a tour of a prospective community.

While the exact boundaries between the south Bronx and the north Bronx depend upon who you ask, the north Bronx is largely considered to be the area bordering Westchester County and Yonkers down to Fordham Road or Pelham Parkway.
Historically, the north Bronx has been an affluent area and was even a childhood home to U.S. President John F. Kennedy.[06] Today, it remains more affluent than the south Bronx.
